Trail Horses & Their Behavior

Trail systems say something significant about how communities can preserve a distinctive and slower paced or “rural” atmosphere. Recognizing this potential and building trails which are permanent improvements allows developers and property owners to significantly benefit from higher property values.

1.
Due to the urbanization of America, the general population has lost its contact with and innate understanding of most animals, including livestock. The horse, in particular, is a unique animal. Because it is large and seldom encountered, people assume that it is no different than other species of large animals.
2.
Pleasure riding is a form of equestrianism that encompasses many forms of recreational riding for personal enjoyment, absent elements of competition. Recent studies in the United States have indicated the pleasure riding is the number-one equine activity engaged in by horse owners.
3.
Various types of horse breeds may be found on trails, such as Quarter Horses and Arabians. Typically, horses are specifically trained as pleasure horses to ride trails. For example, the Tennessee Walking Horse has a reputation for having a calm disposition and naturally smooth riding gaits. It is a calm and easygoing breed, typically easy to train. While the horses are famous for flashy movement, they are quite hardy, popular for trail and pleasure riding as well as show. They are popular in trail riding because of their smooth gaits, stamina and easy temper.

Wisely caring for their horses, it is very unlikely that a trail rider would venture off designated trails for fear of holes, ground bees and other dangerous off-trail elements. Trail riders stay on the trail.

Most trail riders are responsible individuals, respecting the rights of others, including private property owners and others, so they can enjoy their recreational activities undisturbed.
